{"id":2067,"date":"2017-02-28T11:00:59","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T17:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/?p=2067"},"modified":"2021-10-29T16:01:04","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T21:01:04","slug":"supply-chain-management-pt-3-manufacturing-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/blog\/supply-chain-management-pt-3-manufacturing-operations\/","title":{"rendered":"Supply Chain Management Pt 3: Manufacturing &#038; Operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Supply-Chain Council developed \u2018SCOR\u201d: Supply Chain Operations Reference Model.\u00a0 It is built around six major processes: plan, source, make, deliver, return and enable.\u00a0 It measures supply chain performance via standardized methods.<\/p>\n<p>There is a plethora of information and processes under the manufacturing and operations supply chain.\u00a0 It will be impossible to cover it all!\u00a0 Let\u2019s go over some highlights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building the Machines that Make Machines &#8211; Manufacturing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now it is time to create your product.\u00a0 Among the many responsibilities of manufacturing, their main job is to create the end product.\u00a0 Now let\u2019s think about how much goes into creating the final product for the end customer. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/\">Mechanical components<\/a>, machines, material, drawings, labor, processes, storage, computers and engineering is all involved with manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturing is responsible for using machines to create the product.\u00a0 They write programs to run the machines, control the operations, control the quantity created, and even control the feasibility to which product can be made.<\/p>\n<p>Engineering begins with their design and often times must consult with the manufacturing team.\u00a0 Open communication between engineering and manufacturing is key to the final product of being created.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturing also has the responsibility of scheduling assembly operations to complete product.\u00a0 They create the flow in which the product is made from machining, coating, assembly, sub-assembly and even storage.<\/p>\n<p>In manufacturing, there is an approach called cellular manufacturing.\u00a0 This applies to facilitate small-lot and continuous-flow production.\u00a0 Equipment and workstations are arranged so that all operations to produce the product is done in close proximity.\u00a0 Operators are cross-trained to perform a variety of tasks.\u00a0 Many manufacturers adopt this approach as a way to see quality issues quickly and also receive feedback between operators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keeping The Lights On &#8211; Operations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Along with manufacturing, operations is in charge of day to day activities.\u00a0 The building in which manufacturing is done requires upkeep and even office supplies.\u00a0 Operations is in charge of many things to make the company run smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>Both manufacturing and operations are in charge of process improvement.\u00a0 They make sure processes run smoothly, efficiently and effectively.\u00a0 They are to make sure there is minimal waste in their processes while also making improvements.<\/p>\n<p>One often hears the term \u201cMRO\u201d in supply chain.\u00a0 It stands for Maintenance, repair and operations.\u00a0 While your company works to create the final product, there are many steps required to help maintain those processes.\u00a0 Machines require maintenance and repairs whether finding a replacement <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/fs_machining\/\">end mill<\/a> for a machine or replacing a <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/mech\/M0300000000\/\">locating pin<\/a> on a fixture.\u00a0 It is important to consider the quality of MRO in order for a quality end product.<\/p>\n<p>To help with smooth operation, predictive maintenance is an important practice to consider.\u00a0 These are activities to prevent unscheduled downtime with machines.\u00a0 By collecting and analyzing data on equipment conditions, operations can predict and plan maintenance before letting the machine fail, keeping the machines in good working condition. Such parameters that are analyzed are vibration, noise, temperature, and lubricant levels.<\/p>\n<p>Operations is also in charge of situations of emergency such as inclement weather or even labor unrest.
