The architectural definition is a structural part that supports weight. A ball bearing is a rolling element bearing that uses balls to maintain separation between the inner races. <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/configurator\/ball-bearing-finder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ball bearings<\/a> are typically used between <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/mech\/M0800000000\/M0808000000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cantilever<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/mech\/M0800000000\/M0801000000\/M0801010000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rotary<\/a> shafts to transfer axial or radial load. <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/mech\/M0800000000\/M0802000000\/M0802010000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ball bearings<\/a> need to be retained in three directions, radial, axial, and circumferential in relation to its housing and a shaft. The radial and circumferential direction retention is mainly based on a concern on fit tolerance selection. The remaining &#8220;axial direction&#8221; retention cannot be solved by press fitting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/mech\/M0800000000\/M0802000000\/M0802010000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bearing<\/a>. There are several ways to axially retain bearings and what better way to explain them than with application examples. This example uses a nut tightened cantilever type. A bearing retaining collar is used to fix the idler pulley bearing. A washer is placed between the bearing and the collar to provide an ample access to the collar\u2019s tightening screw. It is important to note that the bearing end cap needs to match the outer diameter of the cantilever pin shaft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Multiple Bearing Retaining Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, an axial mounting method of\u00a0bearings\u00a0is explained using a linking mechanism with\u00a0bearings\u00a0mounted on two <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/detail\/110300105210\/?PNSearch=BGHKS&amp;HissuCode=BGHKS&amp;searchFlow=suggest2products&amp;Keyword=BGHKS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T shaped bearing holders<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2696\" width=\"362\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall4.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall4-150x129.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall4-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, three bearing retaining methods are utilized. A metal washer is used on the tightening side of the cantilever pin to hold against the inner ring of a radial bearing. A bearing spacer is placed between the link arm and a bearing to support the link\u2019s rotation motion. The bearing on the opposite side is fixed to the cantilever pin shaft by its inner ring with a bearing end cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of Rotating Shaft Retention<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2697\" width=\"350\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall5.jpg 340w, https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall5-123x150.jpg 123w, https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall5-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an example of rotating shaft retention using a bearing holder set (T-shaped two bearing type, or bottom mount two bearing type) and bearing nuts with anti-loosening set screws or <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/mech\/M0800000000\/M0810000000\/M0810010000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bearing lock nuts.<\/a> Loosening of the bearing nut is prevented by use of a set screw and a set piece made of copper alloy. The set piece made of soft copper alloy is first inserted in a screw hole, and a set screw is tightened to crush the soft alloy piece on the shaft thread to prevent the bearing nut from loosening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2698\" width=\"325\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall6.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BearingInstall6-150x133.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an example using <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/mech\/M0800000000\/M0810000000\/M0810040000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bearing holding pins<\/a> also called bearing shaft screws. A bearing holding pin holds against the inner ring outer diameter from the end side, and a collar from the inside is pressed against the inner ring outer diameter of the bearing from the other side to fix the bearing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/vona2\/mech\/M0800000000\/M0801000000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shaft.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a variety of ways to retain bearings in your application but it is equally important to note the tolerances of bearings.
