{"id":892,"date":"2015-02-11T09:33:04","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T15:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/?p=892"},"modified":"2021-11-02T17:03:28","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T22:03:28","slug":"the-great-debate-stepper-or-servo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/blog\/the-great-debate-stepper-or-servo\/","title":{"rendered":"The great debate: Stepper or Servo?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many engineers may\u00a0stumble upon this question when specifying a motor for an application; should I\u00a0use a Stepper or a Servo motor?<\/p>\n<p>Both stepper and servo motor are excellent but, what&#8217;s really important is understanding their capabilities. \u00a0The simplest way to understand the difference is to consider speed.\u00a0Servo motors \u00a0are better for high speed applications while stepper motor are better for low speed applications. Let\u2019s take a look at a simple example of belt drive application.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-894\" style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/beltdriveforservoarticle.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-894 \" src=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/beltdriveforservoarticle-300x29.png\" alt=\"beltdriveforservoarticle\" width=\"356\" height=\"57\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MSA Belt Drive Actuator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the example above, let\u2019s assume below are our requirements:<br \/>\nTravel requirement: 2500mm\/sec<br \/>\nStroke: 2 meter<br \/>\nLoad: 1 Kg<\/p>\n<p><strong>Motor Sizing Example Results:<\/strong>\u00a0(Sizing result is based on pulley diameter on the belt drive system)<\/p>\n<p>Before\u00a0you\u00a0can select a stepper or a servo system,\u00a0you&#8217;ll first\u00a0need to know what the motor requirements are for your\u00a0application. You&#8217;ll\u00a0need to calculate inertia, required torque, and required speed. You will also need\u00a0to add safety factors for the required torque calculation.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, let\u2019s say the required speed for this application is 2871 r\/min, and the required torque is 3.117 lb-in, or 48.87 oz-in. Based on these needs, let\u2019s compare a Nema 23 size servo and stepper motor side by side.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Stepper_Server_Comparison.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-907 \" src=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Stepper_Server_Comparison.jpg\" alt=\"Stepper_Server_Comparison\" width=\"596\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Stepper_Server_Comparison.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Stepper_Server_Comparison-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the speed toque curve above, Stepping motor would have a higher starting torque at low speed, but as speed increases, the torque curve falls.\u00a0 Comparing it with the servo motor torque curve, the servo motor might not have a high starting torque, but a servo system maintain its torque quite well at higher speed, which is why for a high speed positioning application a servo system would be preferred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Correct-Servo-Stepper-Image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-930\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Correct-Servo-Stepper-Image-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"Correct Servo Stepper Image\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Correct-Servo-Stepper-Image-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/us.misumi-ec.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Correct-Servo-Stepper-Image.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Correct-Servo-Stepper-Image2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-929\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Correct-Servo-Stepper-Image2-300x180.gif\" alt=\"Correct Servo Stepper Image2\" width=\"349\" height=\"219\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By plotting on the charts\u00a0where our application falls on the torque curve, we can highlight\u00a0the difference in system performance for our high speed application.
