We\u2019d like to congratulate our first place winner, Andrew Chase-Ziolek, on his design of an Ultimaker 2 derivative called the\u00a0<strong>Alumimaker 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/3d-contest-winner-body.GIF.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-935 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/3d-contest-winner-body.GIF.jpg\" alt=\"3d contest winner body.GIF\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/3d-contest-winner-body.GIF.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.misumiusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/3d-contest-winner-body.GIF-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Andrew\u2019s words: \u201cIt includes several design improvements, but most importantly it&#8217;s made with 2020 extrusion, so it&#8217;s easy to modify and expand the build volume (easiest in Z, but also easy in X and Y.) I decided to design this because the Ultimaker 2 has received <a href=\"http:\/\/makezine.com\/review\/guide-to-3d-printing-2014\/ultimaker-2\/\">great<\/a>[1]\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wylk4W64opo\">reviews<\/a>[2]\u00a0\u00a0, I wanted to experiment with their motion system, and I wanted a system that I could easily upgrade to dual extrusion. One advantage of them is that they\u2019re set up to use the stock temperature-dependent resistors (RTD), while the Smoothieboard isn\u2019t. I just replaced the RTD with a thermistor. The disadvantage of using the stock Ultimaker 2 electronics is that they\u2019re still using an 8-bit Amtel processor which generally works but is probably a bit underpowered.<\/li>\n<li>I used a Smoothieboard mini, but if you want to do dual extrusion, it\u2019s probably easier to use a Smoothieboard X5, which has four mosfets (2 Hot ends, Bed and Fan) rather than just 3.
