Following up on “Choosing the Right Contact Switch for Industrial Applications” we’re diving into the features and benefits of Metrol’s line of precision contact switches.

Available through MISUMI, Metrol’s high precision position touch switches hold not just quality and durability, but also a wide range of series that are sure to be a perfect fit for any application.

The following list of series all have an amplifier-free construction. This allows for accurate readings without the need to compensate for the potential temperature drift seen in electronic switches.

MT-Series: The Origin of Precision Positioning Switches

With the need for durability and repeatable precision, the MT-Series offers a fully mechanical switch that doesn’t rely on any electrical components.

During the testing phase of a machine build, your team finds out the proximity switches were not only giving false readings but also getting damaged.

In an environment where there can be water, coolant, or machine chips flying about, a Metrol MT-Series touch switch with its IP67 protection rating is more than capable of withstanding the harsh conditions.

Protection

With all switches in the MT-Series carrying an IP67 protection rating, it has proved more resistant when compared to other switches due to its cylindrical shape and tight tolerances when placed in applications such as CNC machine tools and automotive production lines.

Contact Material

With a contact face made of cemented carbide, the MT-Series switch can be used for many applications with the advantage of high hardness and great wear/corrosion resistance.

Repeatability

Having the smallest range at 0.5 µm, the MT-Series is the most accurate of the three featured series. With the ability to have a straight-on or angled approach, it is a good general-use switch option.

CS-Series: The Cost-Effective Touch Switch

The CS-Series was designed with awareness that not every customer would need every feature. This series reduces size and cost for designs and applications that don’t need all the features of the MT-series.

Contact Lifetime

Having a contact face made of SUS HRC50 and a wider repeatability range of 5µm. This series is capable of a contact lifetime of 10 million operations. Keeping their waterproof properties with a redesigned boot ring allows this lifetime in a submerged state.

Size

Due to the removal of unnecessary features, the CS-Series switches were able to come in a variety of lengths from 40 to 66 mm long and also in diameters from M5 to M12.

PT-Series: The Most Compact High Precision Touch Switch

The PT-Series was established after briefing with younger engineers with experience in design and machining. This series is known for its high precision switch smaller than the size of a penny.

You’re in the last review for an important design, and the customer decides they would like to replace the sensors with contact switches.

Instead of redesigning the entire station, a Metrol PT-Series touch switch can be easily added with minimal change to existing parts due to its ultra-compact size.

Size

While keeping a straight-on angle of contact in mind, this series offers a diameter of 5mm and a length ranging from 18-25mm.

Pretravel

Having a pretravel of 0-0.3mm, the movement needed to reach the point of operation is minimized and the force required to activate is less, making the switch perfect for sensitive industries such as semiconductors, tooling, and medical equipment.
