IDEA NOTE Detection of a nonmagnetic substance with a proximity sensor

When the contactor is touching a workpiece the spring is compressed and the opposite side is detected with a proximity sensor.

Purpose

  • A proximity sensor is used to detect nonmagnetic cylindrical work pieces across a V-shaped staging table.
  • A robot places a cylindrical object on the staging table, where it is detected. After confirmation of the piece, the process is continued by hand. If no confirmation signal is received the robot conveys the next work piece.

  • Verify the spring constant for appropriateness to the presence of the workpiece.
  • Spring
    • Workpiece weight: 2.1 kg x 9.8 = 20.58 N
    • Spring constant: Select 0.3 N/mm.
    • Spring bending at workpiece existence: 22.75 mm (initial bending 4.8 mm + displacement 17.95 mm)
    • Spring force at workpiece presence = 0.3 N/mm x 22.75 mm = 6.8 N
      ⇒ 20.58 N > 6.8 N Thus, the workpiece is not lifted up.

Other Design Consideration

  • By using flat washers at the bottom of the spring, the spring force can be adjusted by the number of flat washers used.
  • Urethane is used for the contactor to prevent scratches on workpieces.
